OUR CHURCHESST THOMAS À BECKET CHURCH
St Thomas à Becket is a beautiful small Norman church situated in one of the most picturesque and peaceful locations in Bath. It was built between 1490 and 1498 by John Cantlow, Prior of Bath Abbey. All who come here cannot help but be charmed by its aura. Despite its peacefulness, there is a hive of activity here by the dedicated members of the church who strive to maintain not only the building in its glory but also the other meaning of the word 'church' - the loving community and friendship that comes through active worship. The church can hold just over 90 people comfortably - its capacity is severely tested at festivals such as Christmas and at times of celebration for baptisms and weddings, especially with our growing membership. We welcome seeing our church so full. Through the very generous gifts of our congregation, we have recently upgraded the heating system and installed proper toilet facilities for all. Opening times - As well as the regular Sunday morning services, the church is also open to visitors each Sunday from the beginning of May to the end of September, between 2.30 and 5.30pm. ST MATTHEW'S CHURCH
St Matthew's is a much larger and grander church, built for the Victorians. Its beautiful spire dominates the village and houses the bells that were once situated at St Thomas, but were taken apparently following a bitter battle in the porch of St Thomas between the churchwardens! During the 1970's it was refurbished to provide the Parish Hall and various smaller meeting rooms. Towards the end of the last century, weekly attendance fell to the point where it was no longer feasible to continue regular worship here. However, it is still used for some larger services and is an excellent building for use by other communities such as local schools for their nativity services. It is the largest church in Bath with the exception of the Abbey and consequently is a very useful venue for holding events. The church, hall and meeting rooms are available for hire, either for regular events such as aerobics classes, or for one-off large events, parties and exhibitions. For more information, please see venue booking.
